Ways to get involved at school
Joining the PTA (or parent group)
- Find out if your school has a PTA, Friends of the School group, or similar.
- Ask how often they meet and what kind of support they’re looking for.
- Choose roles or tasks that fit your time and energy.
There are many different ways to help, and even small contributions make a difference to our school whānau.
Volunteering at school
- Offer to help with reading, trips, sports days, or special events.
- Let the teacher or office know what days or times you’re available.
- Remember that it’s okay to say no when you’re busy.
Fundraising and events
- Support school fundraisers in ways that work for your budget.
- Help with planning, setting up, or packing down events if you can.
- Attend school events when possible so your child sees you involved.
Meeting other parents
- Say a quick hello at drop-off or pick-up when you can.
- Join class or year-level chats if your school uses them.
- Look out for opportunities to connect at school events.
Micro-connections
Building connections with other families
Feeling part of the school community can make school life easier and more enjoyable for everyone. It’s about creating a network of support for you and your tamariki.
You don’t need to do everything to belong. Even small, occasional contributions help build a strong, welcoming school community for all children.
Supporting school initiatives
- Read newsletters and notices so you know what’s happening.
- Ask how you can support new projects or changes at school.
- Share positive feedback with staff when things are going well.
Informed Support
Finding what works for you
- Remember that involvement looks different for every family.
- Choose one or two small ways to be involved that feel manageable.
- It’s okay for your level of involvement to change over time.
