Making the most of school holidays

Holidays don’t need to be packed with activities to be meaningful. A mix of rest, play, and simple outings is enough to recharge and connect as a family.

  • Mix free activities (parks, bike rides, beach trips, library visits) with occasional paid outings.
  • Keep a list of “boredom busters” like board games, baking, and crafts.
  • Involve children in choosing activities each week.
  • Check your library website for free or low-cost holiday events.
  • Explore local walks, playgrounds, and community spaces.
  • Pack snacks and water to keep costs down on days out.
  • Agree on some basic screen-time boundaries together as a family.
  • Balance screen time with outdoor play, reading, and creative activities.
  • Use screens intentionally (e.g. movie nights) rather than all-day background noise.

Getting ready for the new term

Explain that a little preparation can make the return to school feel calmer for everyone.

Holiday routines
  • Gradually bring bedtimes and wake-up times closer to school-day hours in the last week of holidays.
  • Reintroduce simple routines like packing bags and laying out clothes the night before.
  • Talk with your child about what they’re looking forward to and anything they’re worried about.
Back-to-school checklists
  • Check uniforms, shoes, and stationery to see what still fits or needs replacing.
  • Wash and repack school bags, lunchboxes, and drink bottles.
  • Note any key dates for the new term (teacher-only days, sports, activities).

Holidays don’t have to be perfect to be special.

Small traditions, simple outings, and a bit of planning go a long way in helping children feel rested, connected, and ready for the term ahead.
