Morning routines that set everyone up for the day

Calm, predictable mornings help children arrive at school ready to learn. Small changes can make a big difference in how the whole family starts their day.

Morning routine checklist

  • Wake-up time that allows enough time to get ready without rushing.
  • Getting dressed, breakfast, teeth, and bag packed in the same order each day.
  • A simple visual schedule or list children can follow.
  • Packing the school bag together and checking for notices or forms.
  • A calm “goodbye” routine that works for your child.

Preparing the night before

  • Lay out uniforms, shoes, and bags in a set spot.
  • Pack lunches, drink bottles, and snacks where possible.
  • Check the calendar for any special events (non uniform days, trips, sports).
  • Involve your child in small jobs so they build independence.
After-school rhythm
  • A regular order for after-school time (snack, play, homework, screen time, dinner, bath, bedtime).
  • A short check-in about your child’s day that focuses on feelings as well as events.
  • Time for free play or quiet time before homework.

After-school and evening routines

Explain that after-school time is when children decompress, reconnect, and get ready for the next day.

Homework and screen time
  • A set time and place for homework, with minimal distractions.
  • Short, realistic chunks of focused time, especially for younger children.
  • Clear limits around screens on school nights, agreed as a family.
Bedtime routines
  • A consistent bedtime that allows enough sleep for your child’s age.
  • A calming wind-down routine (bath, story, cuddle, quiet chat).
  • Getting the bedroom ready for sleep (dim lights, devices out of the room where possible).

Remind parents that no routine will be perfect every day, and that it’s okay to adjust as children grow and family life changes. Encourage them to start with one or two small changes that make mornings and evenings feel a little smoother.
